Save Water
Natural water abundance for sustainable homes
Designed to exceed NSF 350 international water quality standards for safe reuse in homes and gardens.
Keep Your plants
Plant-powered water treatment technology in a stylish raised-bed planter or luxury greenwall.
Cut water bills by up to 40%
Water prices are rising and water sources are shrinking.
50% of household water goes down the drain only lightly used. Reuse it instead!
Low maintenance
No filters to change!
Monitored 24/7 to optimize treatment performance, ensure water quality, and notify technicians when service is needed.
What is it?
LeapFrog Design’s Estuary is a plant-powered greywater treatment system. On the outside, a modern planter box adds beauty to the landscape with native and ornamental plants; inside, plants and microbes clean greywater from sinks, showers, and washing machines for reuse in toilet flushing and irrigation.
How does it work?
First, lightly used greywater from laundry, sinks, baths, and showers is collected for treatment. Then, in the Smart Bench and Treatment Planter, plants and microbes absorb and break down contaminants, cleaning the water for reuse. Finally, cleaned water is ready for non-potable reuse in toilet flushing, irrigation, and other select applications.
Why Plants?
Plants make the system more resilient.
The plants and microbes themselves work together to stabilize the system and recover from toxic chemicals.
Plants clean water better than mechanical or chemical methods.
In a plant-based system, plants and microorganisms absorb and break down contaminants in the water. No need for clog-prone filters, and no chemicals to add or refill.
Plants help people be their best.
Connecting with nature can boost our immune systems, support mental and emotional health, create social connections, and aid physical recovery, as well as reduce anxiety and improve cognitive performance and sleep.
Dimensions
The bench and planter modules are sized 48 in x 24 in x 22 in (LxWxH).
Capacity
Each planter module can provide 50 gallons of clean, recycled water per day.
Savings
Over 10 years, the average household saves:
350,000 gallons of water,
$12,000 in water costs, and
13 tons of CO2 emissions.
Materials
The module walls are made of glass-fiber reinforced plastic (GFRP). Plumbing components are made of PE, HDPE, PVC, and ABS. All other component materials per manufacturer specifications.
Power supply
120 VAC, 20 Amp
Estimated power consumption
±200 kWh/year
Average recycled water quality
The Estuary system has been designed and tested to meet the NSF/ANSI 350 standard for residential greywater reuse:
CBOD5 < 10 mg/L
TSS < 10 mg/L
Turbidity < 5 NTU
E. coli < 14 MPN/100 mL
pH 6.0 – 9.0
Noise level
+30 dB
In most instances, yes. Using the LeapFrog Estuary or Cascade as an Advanced Treatment System for secondary or tertiary treatment of effluent (kitchen or septic) definitely requires a permit, as does treating greywater to return it to the house for toilet flushing.
